Judith Solodkin was the first woman to graduate from the Tamarind Institute as a Master Lithographer in 1975. She founded her own print shop upon returning to New York City, her hometown. Forty-five years later now located in Riverdale, Bronx, N.Y. and operating as a print publisher, contract printer and gallery SOLO Impression Inc continues to collaborate with artists on fine art lithography, and relief printing. Some of the artists who have enjoyed this ink and fiber collaboration include Ghada Amer and Reza Farkhondeh, Louise Bourgeois, R.M. Fischer, Kent Henricksen, Gilah Hirsch, Beryl Korot, Alan McCollum, Liliana Porter, Elaine Reichek and Kay Rosen. Innovative collaborative techniques have been a mainstay of SOLO Impression and some artists using lithography combined with various media are Lynda Benglis, Richard Bosman, Françoise Gilot, Grace Graupe- Pillard, Howard Hodgkin Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Christian Marclay, Maya Lin, Whitfield Lovell, Michael Mazur, Betye Saar, Nancy Spero, Richard Tuttle, and Andrea Zittel.
Without intending to, Solodkin has been a trailblazing supporter of women in the arts since the mid-1970s, developing an “old girls’ network” with the same rigor and opportunity afforded male artists. In 1996 and 2010, retrospectives The Collaborative Print: Works from SOLO Impression was presented at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC. In 2013 she received a Printer Emeritus award from the Southern Graphics Council International. Taschen Publishing commissioned 3 lithographs by Françoise Gilot in 2017 and Ode à l’oubli, a collaboration with Louise Bourgeois was exhibited in “An Unfolding Portrait” at the Museum of Modern Art in 2018. This November she will be honored by the International Print Center of New York for her printmaking achievements.
Editions by SOLO Impression are held in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New York Public Library, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, the Bibliotheque Nationale, and the Tate Modern, to name a few. Judith also received a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University in 1967, has taught art on the college and graduate level and is presently teaching Lithography, Digital embroidery, Soft sculpture and Fashion and Art at the School of Visual Arts and Lithography at Pratt Institute.
